Discontinued

An optical IC light detector that consists of a light detecting element that is sensitive to the near infrared portion of the spectrum, together with associated signal processing circuitry, all integrated onto a single chip. The device employs a light modulating system which makes the device impervious to disturbance from external lights.

  • Spectral sensitivity range approx 700nm to 1150nm (near infrared)
  • Wide operating supply voltage range 4.5V to 16V
  • 2pd Differential type
  • Through-hole type
  • Offset leads 4-pin package
  • Sharp IS471FE type
Type Light detector IC

Such a useful little chip that Im glad Rapid are stocking them now. This device has four pins, two for power, one as an output and one to drive an external infra red LED. The LED is modulated so the chip can differentiate it from other sources of infra red. This chip is perfect for making modestly wide "break beam" detectors for use in awkward situations where a mechanical switch or other type of sensor is unsuitable. The sensitivity can be adjusted by using a resistor in series with the emitter LED. For best range use a good high output infra red LED. The sensitivity is high enough to use this chip as a reflective sensor to detect when someone puts their hand near an object. Its important to ensure good blocking of light between the emitter and detector in this application though. Ive used this chip a lot in TV props where some level of automation was needed, and they performed well.
