Contemporary artist Martin Smith better known by his alter ego, JubeJube has a penchant for the iconic. His work is crafted around famous faces, reproducing the likes of Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Kate Moss in dappled, painterly style. His recent series focuses on late greats of the music world, which he has immortalised in stained glass designs powerful tributes which are not only aesthetically captivating but sacred and symbolic, filled with a bygone reverence that well befits the iconic figures. ‘Amy’ depicts the wonderful Amy Winehouse in profile, her hands lifted to her face in prayer. Smith has captured everything those familiar tattoos, the thick lick of black eyeliner, that inimitable hair. Framing her head like a sacred halo, Smith has printed lyrics from Winehouse’s tragic magnum opus Love Is A Losing Game, recasting the singer as a saintly depiction in a clever twist of icon meets iconography. The print is beautiful, powerful and moving just like one of Winehouse’s haunting melodies.
