This is a new limited edition giclee reproduction of a 1939 watercolour by Eric Ravilious. It is of the lighthouse off Beachy Head which, in 1902, replaced Belle Tout lighthouse on the cliffs still standing today but now a private house. The light in this picture is used to graphically create several triangular planes from light, sea and land. The original picture was exhibited to great acclaim, and it was after this that Ravilious was commissioned as a war artist to paint his now famous series of coastal views. The cliffs of Southern England are, iconic of England as a whole even the name ‘Albion’, the oldest name for the Island of Britain, may derive from the whiteness of the chalk.
