The work of fine artist Kristjana S Williams is about layering the old with the new. Her images reference traditional art and illustration, bringing them up to date with contemporary printing and collage techniques. Williams’ work explores the use of vibrant colour, clashing different shades and tones for a resultant harmony which is at once compelling and beautiful. ‘Eitthad Sudur a Bogin’ is a circular image, contained on a flat, pastel pink background. Over this, Williams has layered, in collage style, a multitude of Victorian, carnivalesque images hot air balloons, butterfly wings, birds, beasts and decorative etchings. With a trompe l’oeil effect, Williams has added shadow and allowed the image to spill beyond its border, to create the illusion of three dimensional layering and bring the traditional aesthetic into the twenty first century. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
