Magnus Gjoen former designer for Vivienne Westwood knows a thing or two about style. Having recently turned his hand to the art of print making, Gjoen creates images that are full of startling beauty as well as a profundity of thought his art explores the interaction between power and fragility, juxtaposing the two states for maximum conceptual effect. Gjoen’s work blends a range of styles, incorporating a street and pop aesthetic into a fine art approach. ‘Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining Large’ depicts a neo classical family, posing by a colonnaded building to have their portrait painted. In the background, Gjoen has pasted a huge mushroom cloud, exploding behind the well tempered group, in a way which is both comical and unsettling. The entire image is rendered in black and white, but Gjoen has finished the print with sumptuous gold leaf, which radiates against the monochrome. ‘Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining Large’ is thoughtful and provocative, while intensely beautiful a real triumph of contemporary art.
