The work of Louise McNaught takes its inspiration form the natural world raising the status of animals and creatures to the majestic and sublime, McNaught creates bold images, using eye catching colour and compositional techniques. ‘Exhale’ is a beautiful play of juxtapositions, depicting a stately, white polar bear, surrounded by fluttering, orange Monarch butterflies. A single butterfly hovers in the bear’s open mouth, creating tension in the moment of stillness is this as the title suggests an exhalation, or does the image depict the darker side of the animal kingdom The ambiguities and uncertainties are what make the print so striking, and the interplay of bright colour and bold monochrome is visually arresting. To finish the piece, McNaught has employed her signature ‘bleed’ motif, with soft, thin lines of grey and white paint running down the print, producing a gentle sense of dynamism and flow.
