The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new using modern printing techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. In ‘Falin Viltur Blar’ Williams uses an antiquated atlas as her background, adding a bright blue, cyan wash to the sea. Around the edges spilling over the border and obscuring some of the continental detail Williams has overlaid a host of exotic creatures and tropical plants etched monkeys swing from the top of the map, pop coloured ferns sprout form the edges, and one or two of Williams’ iconic butterflies can be spotted amongst the foliage. Williams has vividly translated the scientific Victorian arts of cartography and natural history into a bright, beautiful modern day aesthetic. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
