The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints which make deft use of mixed media techniques, collage styles, and material innovation are distinguished by their bold use of colour and compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi. ‘Falling From Grace Silver’ employs bricolage technique to exceptional success. The portrait of a woman sits at the centre of the print, her face adorned with criss crossing black wire. All around her, Smythe has spray painted efflorescent flowers, blossoming in shades of pinks and violets, intercut with magazine scraps and fragments of text. Using a palette of soft pastel shades against hard, inky black and iridescent silver, Smythe brings image, colour and typography into perfect compositional union, for a for a truly beautiful work of contemporary art.
