The Müllner's 14th century house with 12th century Dominican origins to be found in their cellars can probably lay claim to being one of the oldest in the town. The family built a new, state of the art winery here in 1994 bringing their processing facilities up to date, and therefore able to handle the increased volumes from their original 15 hectares to an impressive eighty hectares, which has lessened the need to buy in grapes from other areas. Johann now produces about one million bottles. Grüner Veltliner is not unique to Austria, but it belongs here, rather like Zinfandel belongs to California. It accounts for 36 percent of Austrian vine plantings, and hence produces the bulk of Austria's wines. It tends to be richer and spicier than Riesling, for which Austria has deservedly become famous.
