Contemporary artist James Bates finds inspiration in the most unlikely of places from junk shops to Disney films, scrap heaps to sketch books, Bates’ wide artistic scope is reflected in his multi media art pieces, which range from illustration to animation, advertising to graphic design. Bates’ aesthetic is singular his prints are bold and fearless, mindful of composition and colour in a striking way. ‘Illumination’ depicts an array of wild mushrooms, each one picked out in beautiful, saturated colour, against an etched, charcoal grey forest. Like candy in a candy store, the brightly coloured collection of plants is mesmerising, reminiscent of early Disney films and hand filled technicolour, but set uneasily against the eerie darkness of the landscape, for a truly unique and captivating print.
