Contemporary artist Kristian Jones explores human interaction with the modern world, through his esoteric print work. Employing an illustrative style, Jones’ work creates an uneasy balance between childish innocence and twisted surreality, to probe the problems of contemporary society, while crafting a distinctive and striking aesthetic. ‘Modern Life is Rubbish’ depicts a family, seated around a table at mealtime in sickly sweet 1950s style. On the surface, the line drawing presents an idealised situation even a ‘home sweet home’ sign hangs in the background but a closer look reveals that each characters' face is melting, as it gazes at a tablet arch symbol of the modern world!, which emits a bright red beam of light into the dripping visages. Reflexive, self aware and highly pertinent, ‘Modern Life is Rubbish’ uses familiar aesthetic convention to reveal the deep societal problems of twenty first century living a truly powerful piece of contemporary print work.
