The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints which make deft use of mixed media techniques, collage styles, and material innovation are distinguished by their bold use of colour and compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi. ‘One Day’ features an image of Audrey Hepburn, her back toward the viewer but still identifiable from her iconic hair, sunglasses and pearls. Smythe has overlaid sections of text, ripples of spray paint and graphite, and washes of golden paint on top of the grainy, black and white photograph for a retro bricolage effect. Smythe expertly brings image, colour and typography into perfect compositional union, for a for a truly beautiful work of contemporary art.
