Illustrator and contemporary artist Magda Archer produces an aesthetic like no other. Inspired by all things kitsch and colourful, her work draws heavily on the Pop Art greats, injecting a dose of its own surreal character along the way, for sensational results. Fun and frivolous, colourful and fruity, Archer’s prints are full of an alluring charm that we just can’t get enough of. ‘We’re in The Shit’ shows a cartoon dog, cheerfully posing for the viewer with a large, striped bow about its neck. The image looks like something from a 1950s children’s book with its primary blue background and illustrative style but the aesthetic is jarred against the titular words, which have been printed around the dog. It’s a smart piece both visually appealing and comically endearing, ‘We’re in The Shit’ continues the artistic lineage that begun with the Pop Art movement, working kitsch and collage techniques into a contemporary mode to striking effect.
