Contemporary artist James Bates finds inspiration in the most unlikely of places from junk shops to Disney films, scrap heaps to sketch books, Bates’ wide artistic scope is reflected in his multi media art pieces, which range from illustration to animation, advertising to graphic design. Unsurprisingly, Bates’ aesthetic is singular his prints are bold and fearless, mindful of composition and colour in a striking way. ‘Dance To the Radio’ inspired by Bates’ favourite 45rpm single, ‘Transmission’ by Joy Division is a triumph of graphic design. A black, metallic surface is laced with a series of interconnecting white lines, crossing and diverging to create an intricate network of geometric shapes. The print is at once busy and sparse, abruptly minimal in its use of monochrome and two dimensional perspective. ‘Dance To the Radio’ is a truly striking work of art a statement piece to hang in the home and lift any space.
