Echelon derives from the French ‘echelle’ for ‘ladder’, a it means both a ladder formation, and hierarchy both meanings of which can apply to the group of cyclists in a road race. The group is in formation, and those at the top of the ladder lead, those on rungs below do the chasing. Using hot pinks cream and grey with paired down geometric forms the artists captures the higgledy piggledy yet miraculously balanced sense of the cyclists, working both individually, but also as a group.
