The 60 to 100 year old untrained bushvines at 'Cruz de Piedra' 'stone crosses' marking the Pilgrims' Road to St. Juan de Compostela are bursting with health. High in the Calatayud mountains, southeast of Rioja, they enjoy heat well into autumn, delivering grapes with super ripe flavours. Yields are low but so are overheads at the modern Virgen de Sierra co op winery in Villaroya, making this big red a bargain.
