Warhol created this painting the year screen legend Marilyn Monroe committed suicide. The canvas is covered with an iridescent gold and Marilyn’s face is silkscreened in the centre of the composition. Like Warhol’s other images this uses that a 1953 publicity still for the movie Niagara that he turned into a silkscreen. Warhol was fascinated by celebrity and created hundreds of images of start like Marilyn and Elvis.
