Death and guns in particular emerged as a prominent theme in Warhol’s work in the 1960’s onwards starting with his ‘Death and Disaster’ series. He also created a series of gun prints featuring the 22 snub nosed pistol Valerie Solanas used in 1968 when she shot at him. At the same time as producing the gun images he was producing his images of knives. In this work on red background has a black and white gun superimposed slightly over each other.
