‘Le Chat Noir’ French for ‘Black Cat’ was a nineteenth century Parisian entertainment establishment, in the bohemian arrondissement of Monmatre. It is thought to be the first modern cabaret and its heyday it was part artist salon, part rowdy music hall.nbspSwiss born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker, Theophile Steinlen, was introduced to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir, leading to his commission to create a poster for the cabaret owner, Aristide Bruant.nbspThis is a fantastic art print of the original poster by Steinlen, which was a colour lithograph on paper made ca. 1896. The original is now held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
