Tannat is a variety native to the Gascony region of southwest France. It is a producer of darkly coloured chewy reds, but in this case thoughtful modern winemaking, and the inclusion of a little Cabernet Sauvignon 20% and Cabernet Franc 10%, has brought out the softer fruit flavours alongside traditional solidity. Madiran is known as the most healthy of red wines due to the high levels of procyanidins it contains. This is said to be good for reducing blood pressure, lowering cholesterol and encouraging healthy blood clotting, but one might suggest that to benefit from these procyanidins, one would possibly need to drink a considerable amount of Madiran, which might in turn, bring with it its own problems! This is made by the ultra reliable Plaimont winery, which has an admirable focus on polishing the finer characters of the region's local grapes.1907 was the year that the style and character of Madiran wine was formalised by the Mayor and his Council.
