The Artacho family already had a deep rooted winemaking tradition, before the founding of Bodegas Riojanas with Rafael Carreras in 1890. They still remain proud of their gold medal won at the Barcelona Universal Exposition in 1888. Perhaps it was this success that led to the foundation of the Bodegas but an award presented over 120 years ago is hardly an indicator of todays quality. It does suggest though, that quality remains at the heart of their quest. Their new winery is 20kms from Cencicero, on the Ebro river, in the Rioja Alta. Made from 100% Viura from the vineyards around the winery, the grapes are de stalked and then pressed at low pressure to get the best possible juice before being allowed to settle in tanks and then centrifuged to filter out any un wanted particles. After the fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine is allowed to settle, before being filtered and bottled.
