Contemporary British artist Pam Glew is known for her innovative bleaching technique, which she applies to vintage flags and fabrics. Using dye, stitching and other traditional methods, her work creates images of iconic women from actresses to singers to models all rendered in a consciously filmic aesthetic. ‘Starlite Motel’ uses the American flag as its base, with the red, white and blue providing a simple yet iconic palette. Against the stars and stripes, Glew has created a silhouetted vista, showing a motel sign surrounded by palm trees the quintessential movie Americana. The interaction between the hard, black shapes of the landscape and the softly coloured patterns of the flag is beautifully captured through Glew’s bleach process, for a bold and striking effect.
