Maxim is contemporary British artist who is probably most well known for being of third of British band ‘The Prodigy’. Maxim opts to keep his music and art life separate and describes his art as dark and aims for his viewers to experience that darkness as well as see a side of themselves in it. Maxim’s works are often layered with narrative and ‘The Need to Serve’ was inspired following the artist watching a television programme in which a young girl was running through a field catching butterflies – this piece see’s Maxim wanting to give the butterflies their revenge giving them a knife to help them get free from their net. Maxim likes the idea of subverting expectations and ‘The Need to Serve’ explores the idea of butterflies as pretty and pure creatures but wields them with machetes contradicting expectations. ‘The Need to Serve’ is signed and numbered by the artist.
