‘Chief Running Bull’ is not your average image of a wrestler. As a historic indian chief, this character gives off an air of strength, with penetrating eyes and an unforgiving expression. As a long term fan of wrestling, this signed limited edition from Peter Blake is a very personal piece. He says of his work 'I loved it immediately. I loved the theatre, the fantasy and the idea of good versus evil. I was once asked what I would do if I hadn't been a painter, and after deep thought I decided I would have been a professional wrestler. My wrestlers are fictitious portraits fictitious wrestlers they all have different names.' Peter Blake painted his first series of wrestlers in 1961, inventing each wrestler a heroic personal history. This image is from a new series created by Peter Blake for an Autumn 2015 exhibition ‘Portraits and People’.
