The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered the blending of the old world with the new using modern printing techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. ‘Elin Hnottur’ is s something of a departure from Kristjana S Williams’ characteristic map images, which work from a traditional cartographic base. For this piece, Williams has created a three dimensional white orb or, ‘hnottur’, in Icelandic adorned with colourful birds, butterflies and beasts. The play with perspective and dimension, along with the contrasting of ice white against bright colour, lends the print a decidedly modern feel, despite the characteristic use of traditional Victorian illustrative style. Williams has exquisitely brought the old and the new into communion, creating an aesthetic which is arrestingly beautiful. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
