The work of Kristjana S Williams is inspired, in her own words, by ‘the symmetry in all things living’. Her prints work with processes of layering, building the present onto the past and incorporating the grandeur of the natural world to create compelling and arresting imagery. ‘Fjoluraut Pall Gold Leaf’, part of a series of butterfly prints that Williams has produced, exemplifies these concurrent themes. The print is dominated by a large, colourful butterfly made up from multiple different butterflies wings to create a truly striking aesthetic. The perfect symmetry has all the shock of a Rorschach ink blot experiment, inviting the viewer to search the image for each component part. The butterfly is at once familiar and otherworldly, vibrant in the use of rich colour and intense detail, and could sit impressively alongside any butterfly enthusiast's cabinet collection. Overlaid onto hand finished, gold leaf, the print exudes splendour, allowing the colours to stand out like beautifully set jewels. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
