The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new using modern printing and collage techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. ‘Gaeda Bretland’ resembles an antiquated map of Great Britain, complete with compass and scripted text. Look closer, though, and you’ll see that the islands are made up of highly detailed images of birds, beasts, butterflies and botany, in the style of nineteenth century natural history illustration. Williams has vividly translated the scientific Victorian arts of cartography and natural history into a beautiful, thoughtful, modern day aesthetic. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
