Ryan Callanan the man behind iconic street print artist RYCA is known for his graphic prints and contemporary sculptural works. Drawing on his career as a sign writer, Callanan works with a wide range of materials, incorporating glass, resin and gold leaf amongst others to create tactile pieces of modern art. Callanan’s work is distinguished by its merging of cultural references, taking one image or concept and transplanting it into the context of another, to create a sense of off kilter familiarity. His new release, ‘Love Is The Drug IV’, pays homage to the early work of Damien Hirst, reworking the iconic ‘Spot Paintings’ with a characteristically tongue in cheek twist the spots have taken on the form of colourful hearts, Callanan’s signature motif. The piece is saturated with allusion, while fresh and innovative undoubtedly a cult classic in the making.
