Contemporary artist Justine Smith foregrounds the question of money and currency in her work, considering the social, political and ethical implications of the banknote. Transforming the deeply symbolic piece of paper into an artistic medium, Smith applies banknotes from different global currencies to her collage pieces, creating a range of images that are suffused with conceptual provocation. ‘Money Map of Africa’ uses the notes from the countries of the continent, to recreate a map of Africa in perfect form. Smith’s attention to detail is astonishing, with each crevice of coastline and every tiny island painstakingly reconstructed. The result is both beautiful and compelling, a colourful collage of profound implications.
