The work of Kristjana S Williams is inspired by traditional crafts of fine art with a distinctly Victoriana style and an aesthetic which recalls Chinese silk painting, Williams depicts vivid scenes and figures from the natural world using contemporary collage and print techniques. Her work explores the use of vibrant colour, clashing different shades and tones for a resultant harmony which is at once compelling and beautiful. ‘Oliu Kisa Yellow Eyes’ recalls the rich intensity of Caravaggio’s ‘Salome’ only, studded with exotic, jewell like colour. It has the same dark, brooding menace, as a pair of yellow eyes peer out from an ornate vase against a deep, mahogany backdrop. Erupting from the vase is a bouquet of flowers, birds, butterflies and beasts in colours which are so beautiful they almost shock amber, gold, violet and cranberry. The print oozes a bygone splendour in a way that only a mastery of contemporary printing methods could capture today. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
