The work of fine artist Kristjana S Williams is about layering the old with the new. Her images reference traditional art and illustration, bringing them up to date with contemporary printing and collage techniques. Williams’ work explores the use of vibrant colour, clashing different shades and tones for a resultant harmony which is at once compelling and beautiful. ‘Saekja Baedi Sykur og Braud’ stands out with its bright, hot pink background, reminiscent of pop art prints. Over the distinctly modern palette, Williams has layered, in collage style, a grand, Victorian esque hot air balloon, embellished with all the trappings of nineteenth century exoticism butterfly wings, plumage, majestic beasts and decorative etchings. With a trompe l’oeil effect, Williams has added shadow and allowed the image to spill beyond its border, to create the illusion of three dimensional layering and bring the traditional aesthetic into the twenty first century.
