Rutherglen in northern Victoria, due to its baking hot temperatures, has specialised in this wonderful style of fortified Muscat. The raisined intensity of flavour acheived is a unique taste and is one of the few sweet wines in the world to stand up to chocolate. In 1855 Timothy Stanton abandoned his occupation as a mechanic in West Suffolk, England, and brought his family to Australia in search of gold. When the gold ran out the Stanton family stayed. It wasnt until 1948 that Norman Killeen married into the family and joined the business. Norman's grandchildren now run the business. The Muscat grapes were crushed and fermented on skins for only a day. Fermentation was stopped using high strength grape spirit and then the clarified wine is transferred to large old oak barrels for 2 3 years to mature. Following this, parcels are then carefully blended and returned to smaller oak barrels to reach the desired style and average age.
