Shepard Fairey better known by his psuedonym, Obey is one of the most prolific contemporary graffiti artists in the US and a key defining figure of the street art movement, globally. Famed for his 2008 Obama ‘hope’ poster, his work is influenced by and informs a critique of both advertising and propaganda, featuring politically charged images of consumer culture in a graphic, retro style. The ‘Station to Station’ series explores the medium of collage, pasting exotic travel paraphernalia together to create intriguing pieces, full of charm and character. ‘Station to Station 1’ includes rail tickets, warning signs, slogans and icons from all around the world tickets for Hong Kong and New York, images of lotus flowers, flames and even the signature Andre the Giant face, all in a soft, retro colour palette of pillar box reds, ochre browns and gentle beige. Fairey’s eye is trained to colour, composition and typography, resulting in a design classic which is rich in allusion and powerfully evocative.
