The work of Kristjana S Williams is inspired, in her own words, by ‘the symmetry in all things living’. Her prints work with processes of layering, building the present onto the past and incorporating the grandeur of the natural world to create compelling and arresting imagery. ‘Svart Ljosabox Fidrildi’, part of a series of butterfly prints that Williams has produced, exemplifies these concurrent themes. The print is dominated by a large, colourful butterfly made up from smaller butterflies wings and birds plumage, to create a truly striking aesthetic. Set against a black background, the veins and edges of each wing are picked out in white, lending the feel of a photographic negative with all the shocking symmetry of a Rorschach ink blot experiment. The carnivalesque butterfly takes on a magical, otherworldly quality, vibrant in Williams’ use of rich colour and intense detail. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
