‘WhistleJacket’ is based on possibly the most famous racehorse ever painted and currently hangs prominently in The National Gallery, London. George Stubbs painted ‘Whistlejacket’ three centuries ago with a simple on colour block background – Nick Smith transforms this image using 1450 individual colour blocks each of which are named after a different race horse giving a voyeuristic view onto Stubb’s oil paint pallet back in 1762. This piece is signed, numbered and embossed by the artist and with previous works from Smith selling out incredibly fast we can’t imagine this striking piece will be around for long.
