It was John Lynch, an Irishman, who first settled in Bordeaux in the 1690's and inherited a property near the village of Bages who created and gave his name to the estate. Today it falls into the portfolio of AXA the French insurance giant. This is no bad thing as they are not short of money and can keep vineyards and cellars in prime condition. This is a large estate comprised of some 90 hectares which mostly sit on a gravel ridge, just outside the town of Pauillac, and overlook the Gironde estuary. A perfect site for growing the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine has been a long term favourite of the British market for its consistency of quality and classic make up. Nowadays Lynch have branched out and have opened a relaxed restaurant, Le Vinale, just behind the main Château which has become one of THE places to visit for passing visitors to the region.
