Contemporary artist Justine Smith foregrounds the question of money and currency in her work, considering the social, political and ethical implications of the banknote. Transforming the deeply symbolic piece of paper into an artistic medium, Smith applies banknotes from different global currencies to her collage pieces, creating a range of images that are suffused with conceptual provocation. ‘A is for Albania’ uses the various notes of Albanian currency to create the letters of the alphabet in ornamental script. The result is both beautiful and compelling, a colourful collage of profound implications.
