Magnus Gjoen former designer for Vivienne Westwood knows a thing or two about style. Having recently turned his hand to the art of print making, Gjoen creates images that are full of startling beauty as well as a profundity of thought. His art explores the interaction between power and fragility, juxtaposing the two states for maximum conceptual effect. ‘About the Dead, Either Well or Nothing Pink XL’ uses a masterful blend of styles and techniques, merging the figurative with the abstract to transform the traditional still life into bold modern art. The realist floral display is dimly visible through the layers of colour and contrast that Gjoen has washed onto the print, building up lashings of hot pink and deep mossy green against a black backdrop, to create a semi abstracted aesthetic. Tiny butterflies and insects finish the print, picked out in dazzling gold leaf, for a beautiful and beguiling exercise in stylish art.
