The work of fine artist Kristjana S Williams is about layering the old with the new. Her images reference traditional art and illustration, bringing them up to date with contemporary printing and collage techniques. With a passion for nature and an eye for colour, Williams draws on natural history illustrations to create prints of unrivalled beauty with a unique aesthetic. ‘Barraband Parrot’ depicts a bright, cherry red parrot, perched upon a heavily embellished branch. It’s face, as is typical in Williams’ work, has been obscured by a multitude of brightly coloured butterfly wings, creating an intricate plumage effect. Victorian style etchings and collage like images of smaller birds, butterflies and botany, finish the print, creating an image which recalls the intensity of traditional Chinese silk painting.
