Contemporary artist Kristian Jones explores human interaction with the modern world, through his esoteric print work. Employing an illustrative style, Jones’ work creates an uneasy balance between childish innocence and twisted surreality, to probe the problems of contemporary society, while crafting a distinctive and striking aesthetic. ‘Brainwashed’ depicts a group of children, gathered around a television set in sickly sweet 1950s style. Although idealised on the surface, a closer look reveals that the face of each child is melting as it gazes at the TV, which emits a bright red beam of light into the dripping visages. Reflexive, self aware and highly pertinent, ‘Brainwashed’ uses familiar aesthetic convention to reveal the deep societal problems of twenty first century living a truly powerful piece of contemporary print work.
