The work of fine artist Kristjana S Williams is about layering the old with the new. Her images reference traditional art and illustration, bringing them up to date with contemporary printing and collage techniques. ‘Dyra Loftbelgur’ simulates an antiquated image, with its cracked oil paint effect. Over a sky of soft cloud, Williams has overlaid, in collage style, a carnivalesque hot air balloon, complete with all the trappings of nineteenth century exoticism a plumed bird, soaring wings and blossoming flowers. The image gestures towards a surrealist aesthetic, with its array of component parts and unexpected objects a wedge of gruyere cheese, for example and through a bold, fearless palette. The resultant effect is both beautiful and unique, a truly contemporary merging of styles and periods. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
