The work of Louise McNaught draws its inspiration form the natural world raising the status of animals and creatures to the majestic and sublime, McNaught creates bold images, using striking colour and compositional techniques. In ‘Fragmented Freedom Red’, McNaught has cleverly merged the figurative with the abstract, through the image of a zebra, mounted onto a pillbox red background. At first glance, McNaught seems to have drawn only the head of the zebra, surrounded by a ring of black paint strokes. Closer inspection reveals that the abstract paint strokes are, in fact, the zebra’s body stretching out behind, with the white stripes removed for strong, graphic effect. Above the zebra run streaks of white paint, lending a feeling of movement and dynamism, as though the colour has bled out. The print is a triumph of colour and composition but it also reveals a pertinent reminder of our delicate relationship with nature.
