The machine ‘Scrutiny’ was constructed by Thorgerson and his team using no photoshopcomputer just photography as Storm Thorgerson considers it more ‘real’. This piece explores the mystery of womanhood and man’s quest to understand – the battle between the sexes. It pits mannature against machinetechnology with the machine being inescapable – referring to the effects of technology in our everyday lives. ‘At first glance it may look like an image that’s about threatening a woman – since machinery is often a male preserve, it is a male threat. But it think it is more about man’s paranoia, his feat of woman more than his antipathy. i.e. the only way that a man can understand a woman is via an enormous machine – a scientific probe which can scrutinise the inner recesses of the female mind that many men claim to find so elusive.
