Marcelina Amelia is a contemporary artist, working with mixed media approaches to print, painting and drawing. Taking inspiration from religious iconography, dreams, and sexuality, her work plays at the borders between lust and innocence, creating a beautiful yet uneasy aesthetic. ‘Selfie’ reflects the contemporary obsession with the images of the self and social media, in subtly troubling undertones. The print depicts a stylish girl, her face hidden by her manicured hand. Look closer, though, and you’ll notice that the only beautiful nails in the image adorn the bizarre tiara on her head, made up of disembodied fingers, while the girl’s own hand is tipped with black, talon like claws. SELFIE, in bright pink lettering, sits at the bottom of the print, saturated with darkly comic self awareness. Iconic and insightful, ‘Selfie’ is cutting edge print work at its very best.
