The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints which make deft use of mixed media techniques, collage styles, and material innovation are distinguished by their bold use of colour and compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi. ‘Your Eyes Don’t Lie’ is powerful in its hard simplicity taking a black and white photograph of the archetypal Pop Art muse, Marilyn Monroe, Smythe has simply layered a roughly cut section of red over half of the image. The print exemplifies Smythe’s exceptional sensitivity to colour and compositional technique the strength of the minimalist aesthetic lies in the nuanced and carefully balanced interaction of palette and bricolage, for a for a truly beautiful work of contemporary art.
