The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new using modern printing and collage techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. ‘Austur Robin London 2016’ shows a small section of an antiquated map of London within a circular frame, edged with pink and red geometric border. The map is adorned with carnivalesque, Victoriana embellishment not only familiar images from the London skyline the Shard, St Pauls and WIlliams’ signature flourishes, but a red breasted robin and regal tiger are amongst the cast to be spotted in the foreground. The print is rich, busy and exciting, merging antiquated images with modern processes for a unique contemporary aesthetic. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
