Dragging paint effect

The dragging paint effect creates subtle stripes on your wall.  Dragging is one of the most useful and versatile paint effects. This effect adds texture without it becoming overpowering or intrusive.

To create a dragging effect on a wall you will need the following:

  • Coloured emulsion paint or special effects paint
  • Silk Emulsion as a background for your wall
  • Dust sheets
  • Dragging Brush
  • A roller and tray and/or a brush.

We always suggest testing your look on a piece of cardboard or old plasterboard so you can perfect your technique before applying on a wall.

Paint the wall applying the paint evenly with the paint brush or roller in stripes approximately 50 – 70cms wide.
Before the paint is dry use the dragging brush and drag downwards smoothly.  We suggest as you do this you occasionally step back to review the look. Keep the brush as dry as possible, as it will absorb the paint very quickly and you do not want to apply too much material on the surface.

If you are looking to create the dragging paint effect on a wall we suggest that you work with someone else as it’s important that the dragging is done before the paint dries.  As such its best if one person applies the paint and the other does the dragging effect.
The difficult part of creating the dragging effect is keeping the drag lines uniform. We suggest that you take a section of the wall and play with the effect before attempting to create the final finish.
